Freddy Svane - Advisory Board Global Diplomacy & Sustainability

With a strong foundation in history and diplomacy, Ambassador Svane has been at the forefront of fostering cross-border collaboration in areas critical to global sustainability, environmental policy, and equitable development.

He began his diplomatic journey in 1982, joining the Danish Foreign Service shortly after graduating with a degree in History from the University of Copenhagen in 1981. His early roles included serving as Secretary of Embassy at Denmark’s Permanent Mission to the European Communities in Brussels (1988–1991), followed by leading positions at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, including Head of Section (1991–1993) and Counsellor for Economic Affairs in Paris (1993–1997).

From 1997 to 2000, Ambassador Svane held successive leadership roles as Head of two departments within the North Group at the Ministry, playing a critical role in shaping regional policies. His deepening engagement with global trade and economic diplomacy led him to serve as General Manager at A.P. Møller (2000–2003), and subsequently as Under-Secretary for the Trade Council and Ambassador for Trade Policy and Globalization (2004), where he helped steer Denmark’s international trade strategies toward more inclusive and sustainable practices.

Ambassador Svane has held numerous high-level postings with a strong focus on Asia and the Global South, where ESG values such as environmental resilience, good governance, and regional peacebuilding are key. He served as Denmark’s Ambassador to India, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, and the Maldives from 2010–2015 and again from 2020 onward, including Nepal during his most recent tenure. Between 2015–2019, he served as Ambassador to Japan, fostering cooperation on green technology, clean energy, and climate resilience.

His diplomatic work consistently reflects Denmark’s commitment to global sustainability, circular economy, and responsible innovation. Whether advancing renewable energy partnerships or advocating for equitable trade frameworks, Ambassador Svane has been a consistent voice for ethical global engagement and resilient international partnerships.

Beyond diplomacy, Freddy Svane is a devoted family man, married to Lise Frederiksen, a law graduate from the University of Copenhagen, with whom he has four children.

Ambassador Freddy Svane brings to the board a profound global perspective, informed by decades of experience in policy, trade, and environmental diplomacy—making him a vital contributor to shaping sustainable and inclusive governance for a better world.
